New "Contains Embedded Battery" Attribute
Guidelines and FAQs
Beginning January 1st, 2026, California will impose a Covered Battery-Embedded (CBE) waste recycling fee on the retail sale of CBE products in California. A CBE product, generally, is any product with a battery that cannot be easily removed using common household tools. It is your responsibility as a Marketplace Seller to review the applicable laws and relevant publications for exact details.
A suggested resource to learn more about the CBE waste recycling fee can be found here: https://calrecycle.ca.gov/electronics/
To properly identify applicable products sold through Best Buy, you must review your product catalog and/or offers to determine which of your products contain an embedded battery before January 1, 2026.
- You are required to select one of the following values for the new attribute “Contains Embedded Battery” for all products in the identified categories.
- Each product must have a value selected and attributed:
- Yes - Battery is embedded and not easily removable using common household tools.
- No - Battery is removable by the end user without specialized tools, or the product does not contain a battery of any kind.
- The list of applicable categories can be downloaded here. These categories were identified by Best Buy as products potentially containing an embedded battery.
- See Mirakl’s help article on editing attributes on multiple products. We recommend working through your catalog one category at a time.
Please note: If you do not enter “Yes” or “No” for your products in Mirakl by January 1st, 2026, your products could be blocked from sale in the state of California. Your seller agreement requires that all products comply with federal, state, and local laws. We intend to pass through any costs or fees incurred due to your failure to comply with applicable law or regulation.
