Product Variations
Read to Succeed
Product Variations are used to group products together that are fundamentally the same, but differ slightly – often by one or two different attributes.
Within a variation, the product description and the features are the same across all products included in the variation.
Variations may show differently depending on how you search or browse BestBuy.com. Refer to the examples below to see how variations are displayed on the Product Detail Page (PDP) and Product List Page (PLP).
1. Variations on the Product Detail Page - Variations on the Product Detail Page appear on the right side of the page in Large View.
2. Variations on the Product List Page - Variations on the Product List Page appear underneath the product title for each listing.
There are 3 different ways that variations are displayed across site experiences:
- Text - Text is used for most variation attributes that are not color. The displayed text typically matches the value provided for the attribute on the item.
- Images - Images are used when color is the variation attribute. The experience defaults to the primary image, though some categories may use alternate image views.
- Supported Logos - Supported Logos are images that can be linked to a particular attribute value. They are typically linked to Carrier, Platform, and Brand attributes. This allows for a logo image to be used in the experience.
There are two different ways your products may have variations enabled: Automatic Variations and Seller-Provided Variations (Manual Variations). See below for details on each option.
1. Automatic Variations
Best Buy has automated variations for most categories. The most common automatic variation groups items based on product name and brand and displays a color variation. For automatic variations to generate, it is recommended to follow these guidelines:
- Select an accurate category for the product
- Format the Product name attribute the same across like products
- Don’t include color in the product name (it is automatically appended to the end of the product name for most categories)
- Don’t include brand in the product name (it is automatically prepended to the product name for most categories)
- Provide accurate values for all specification attributes
In summary, Best Buy will automatically create variations when the category, brand, and product titles align, and only the variation attribute (most commonly color) differs. While color is the most common, some categories may also support automatic variation by attributes such as size or wattage, for example.
2. Seller-Provided Variations (Manual Variations)
Attributes are available within select categories for vendors and sellers to manually provide variation data for their products.
These categories include Action Figures, Cables and Adapters, Nightstands, Patio Seating Sets, Seasonal Decorations, and Tables.
The Variant Group Code is a unique ID you define for each product (UPC) you want grouped together and varied based on additional product content data. Each item should have the same identifier, with a maximum of 100 items.
The Variant Themes tell us which attribute(s) you want us to vary, such as Size, Color and Width. Please enter the exact attribute name in this field. Attribute names should be comma-separated, with a maximum of two themes. For example, you may fill in “Color, Tree Height” in the Christmas Tree category.
Here is an example of how you may set this up:
| UPC | Product Name | Color | Material | Variant Group Code | Variant Themes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 111 | Nightstand | Black | Wicker | nightstand-collection | Color, Material |
| 222 | Nightstand | White | Wood | nightstand-collection | Color, Material |
| 333 | Nightstand | Black | Wicker | nightstand-collection | Color, Material |
| 444 | Nightstand | White | Wood | nightstand-collection | Color, Material |
Once the data has been provided in Mirakl and the item has valid data, the data will be reviewed by an internal Best Buy Team Member. If the data is accurate and complete, a variation will be enabled for the brand.
