INTRODUCTION

PURPOSE

The following guidelines describe the different areas used by vendors and the rules regarding how those areas are messaged. These rules should always be followed to ensure consistency throughout the store.

PREFERRED & PROMINENT LOCATIONS

These areas are used by key partners to present compelling vendor stories. The locations:

  • Generally flank labor zones
  • Consist of endcap and inline displays
  • Follow the general fixture and safety requirements for displays
  • Communicate in the vendor brand voice
  • Focus on customers and support the Best Buy sales strategy
  • Adhere to the Best Buy messaging hierarchy

MESSAGING STRATEGY

PURPOSE

The following guidelines describe the different areas used by vendors and the rules regarding how those areas are messaged. These rules should always be followed to ensure consistency throughout the store.

INSPIRE:
DRAW THE CUSTOMER IN

This should be a quick read (3–5 seconds) that strikes an emotional chord with customers and gives them a high-level understanding of what is being sold.

ENGAGE:
CONNECT THE KEY BENEFIT TO THE CUSTOMER

This should draw the customer in by stating the main benefit of the specific technology or product.

EDUCATE:
INFORM CUSTOMERS OF THE RELEVANT INFORMATION

This should go into detail about the features, cost or any information the customer needs to make a decision.

FEATURE ENDCAP SPACES

There are three types of Feature Endcap Spaces, each with its own set of guidelines.

LOWBAY ENDCAP - 4 FOOT

RETAIL TECHNOLOGY GUIDELINES - QUICK ANSWER GUIDE

This section outlines basic guidelines for technology-related components of interactive and digital messaging displays within Best Buy stores.

NETWORKED DISPLAYS:

  • Non Best Buy purchased or managed network equipment is strictly forbidden.
  • This includes routers, switches and hubs.
  • Products and/or equipment that function as a router, ad-hoc or Wi-Fi-direct network are not permissible and will not be approved.
  • Any non-Wi-Fi-compliant devices utilizing the 2.4GHz or 5GHz bands will not be approved for use in our stores.
  • Wi-Fi experiences should utilize our 5GHz band for best reliability and low latency.
  • Reliability on the 2.4GHz band will vary from store to store and is not guaranteed.
  • Best Buy has a dedicated store demonstration network or VLAN in every store.
  • Please contact the C7 Lab for log-in credentials.
  • Best Buy does not block outbound ports, but has a strict firewall for incoming ports.

DISPLAY ELECTRONIC SECURITY:

  • All security must be approved by the C7 Lab prior to the vendor or display manufacturer purchasing a solution.
  • Best Buy has approved specific solutions from the following security providers for use in our stores: MTI, InVue and Sennco. No other vendors will be considered at this time.

AUDIO:

  • Audio will be muted or not present at a default state for all displays.
  • Customer-activated displays will timeout to default state at no longer than 2 minutes. Less than 90 seconds is preferred.
  • Upon customer activation, audio levels should be approximately 70db at 3-foot range to the customer. Customer is able to adjust level directly from display.
  • No max volume requirement if demonstrating speakers. Educational/informative displays should have a maximum volume of 85db at 3 feet.
  • Bluetooth functionality will be disabled for any product capable.

VIDEO:

  • All video quality must be no less than 1080p with a reasonable (12Mbs or greater) bit rate output for all display sizes.
  • Displays must have acceptable viewing angles from side, top and bottom views (dependent on display elevation).
  • Video source must either be embedded into the display or via a media player. No Blu-ray or other disc players will be allowed.
  • Any remotely managed content must be tested and approved by C7 Lab.
  • Vendors may opt to have Best Buy manage automatic content updates by purchasing approved devices and licenses.
  • Commercial TV displays are highly recommended over using consumer grade.
  • Best Buy recommends the use of CE Labs and Brightsign media players.
  • CE Labs MP70 and MP700 media players are compatible with the Best Buy Re-flect content management system.
  • Best Buy does not recommend the use of PCs to drive digital messaging or switching displays.
  • For displays with audio, please encode via DD AC3 2.0 specifications unless demonstrating surround sound.

POWER:

  • All power strips must be of commercial/industrial quality.
  • Must be all-metal design with the ability to withstand weights in excess of 300lbs.
  • 20amp rating.
  • Covered rocker switch and re-settable circuit breaker.
  • 12' heavy duty fully-shielded cords.
  • Must be UL or ETL certified.

LIGHTING:

  • Lighting for displays must be LED only.
  • Color temperature for white should always be 5500K to maintain store uniformity.
  • All lighting and related components must have UL or ETL certification.
  • Lighting elements are to remain static.
  • Light output should not be so bright that it is difficult to stare at from a typical customer distance.
  • Downlighting of inline displays is not allowed.
  • All display lighting is subject to review/approval.
  • Use anti-vandal ring-illuminated push buttons for display control(s), when applicable.
  • Push buttons should be stainless steel and illuminate white when on - No blinking.

MISCELLANEOUS:

Mechanical Switching/Selection Buttons:

  • Must be consistent with our specifications across the store for uniformity/cohesion.
  • Must conform to our lighting standard for default, activated and pressed states.
  • E-mail C7 Lab for exact specs.
  • Light ring element must be either blue or white.

Ventilation:

  • Display’s product and electronics must have adequate ventilation.
  • All displays should employ convection ventilation to allow heat to leave the fixture at the upper level, forcing cool air in through a lower ventilation opening.

Accessibility:

  • All electronic equipment must be accessible from the front of the display.
  • Having to remove, slide, or pivot the display to access electronics from the back or the bottom of the fixture is not allowed.
